Updates on the Petition

05-19-07

I've been busy volunteering for the first annual Spokane Parrot Festival. It was very successful and we're starting on plans for next year. At the festival vet tech Angela Teal was there as well as Nickol Finch DVM from Washington State University (WSU). Dr Nickol Finch, who only sees exotic animals, spoke on avian nutrition. WSU is now looking for people interested in a one day clinic in Spokane. I'm working with with them to assist in showing support for an avian vet here in Spokane. I have passed along all the signatures I have to date. I will keep you all updated!

You may or may not have noticed that the website has been down for several weeks. I apologize if you noticed this! I have switched hosting companies and now we're back on track.

The letters I sent out did get some attention; however, not really what we needed. I've changed my plans a bit. I'm going to send out a revised letter to all the veterinary schools I can find. I'll keep you posted on that. In the meantime, keep sending all your local bird friends here to sign the petition because I'm not giving up... and you shouldn't either!

For other news... I'm helping with a very exciting fund raiser for one of our local 501c3 rescues. We will be holding the first annual Spokane Parrot Festival in May of 2007. We've got some big names coming to present workshops. To volunteer, support, or attend the festival check out the website!

P.S. Don't forget to send me your birdie photos to include on The Birds page! This shows any potential vets the actual birds that need their help!

I gathered names and addresses of veterinarians from the phone book and Internet.   I created a database of all local vets and vet offices and avian board certified vets from Washington State. I came up with around 140 local vets/offices and I have 13 avian board certified vets. I printed off labels and sent the first round of letters off today! The first batch went out to the avian board certified vets. If you know any avian board certified vets in Washington State please contact me so we can capture them all. Later this summer I'll send the letter out to the remaining (local) vets in my database. Again, thank you all for your support! Together we can make a difference!

I'm finalizing the letter to be sent to all the vets in the Spokane area and to the board certified avian vets in Western Washington. When it's complete I'll add a link and let you know when I've sent them out.

The old website looked terrible to me so I just updated it; we'll call this "version 2.0". I sure hope you like it! You can now contact me via snail mail or right through the website! Check back soon for more updates.

Thanks again for your support!

Thank you all for your support! So far we have 221 signatures representing 1,348 birds! I will be picking up all the signature pages in the next couple of days and will only accept signatures online from here on out. Please continue to spread the word, if you know anyone that hasn't signed please send them here to do so.

I did talk to Dr. Finch (at WSU) and she said our best shot at getting an Avian Board Certified Vet to Spokane is by talking to the local vet clinics. We need to convince one of our Spokane Vet Clinics to hire one or we need to convince a Spokane Vet to become Avian Board Certified. I'm working on a letter to send out to all the Spokane Vets and Clinics.

Since I have started this our beloved avian vet, Dr. Kathy Sande, has lost her long battle to cancer. Those who knew and loved her will miss her deeply. She was one of a kind. Although Dr. Sande is not here to give us her support her father has signed the petition to help the cause. Thank you!
